About Superscript Text

Superscript characters sit above the baseline — like the “2” in x² or the “th” in 1ˢᵗ. Unicode defines a full set of superscript letters and numbers, so they display on almost every modern platform without a special font.

Where to Use Superscript

Use superscripts for math equations, chemical formulas, ordinals (1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ), footnotes, and decorative Instagram or Discord text. To copy superscript numbers 0–9 or convert only digits, use the Superscript Numbers tool. Make an ordinal with its correct suffix in the Superscript Ordinal Generator, copy individual glyphs from the complete superscript letters and numbers list, or browse the full Unicode character chart.

What Superscript Text Is

Superscript raises characters above the baseline. You see it in exponents (x², 10³), ordinal indicators (1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ), footnotes and stylised text. Crucially, superscript has full coverage of both the alphabet a–z and digits 0–9, so entire words and sentences convert cleanly — something subscript cannot do. That makes superscript the most versatile of the small-text styles and the safest choice when you want a whole phrase lowered-or-raised and readable everywhere.

How the Superscript Generator Works

Type or paste your text and every character with a superscript form is converted live; the result is plain Unicode you can copy and paste anywhere. No button, no app, no account. Because the output is a string of characters rather than a formatting flag, it survives copying, quoting and cross-platform sharing — paste it into a bio, a caption, a comment or a code comment and it keeps its raised look.

Superscript Use Cases

Compatibility

Superscript has the widest device support of any small-text style because its character set is complete and long-established. It renders on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and the web, and in apps from Instagram to WhatsApp to Discord. A rare device may still show a box for an unusual character, but in practice superscript is the most reliable choice for text meant for a broad audience. Paste into a draft to confirm before publishing something permanent.

What is a superscript example?

The clearest example is an exponent like x² (x-squared) or 10³. In social text, a stylised phrase such as ᵗᵃᵍˡⁱⁿᵉ shows the full alphabet working in superscript.

Does superscript work in WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp renders Unicode superscript in statuses, about lines, group names and messages. The recipient sees the same raised characters you sent, because they are part of the text itself.

Is superscript better than subscript for words?

For whole words, yes — superscript covers the full alphabet, while subscript covers only a partial letter set. Use subscript for formulas and indices, superscript when you want a complete raised word.

Unicode Superscript Is Not Document Formatting

This tool substitutes Unicode characters; it does not apply the superscript formatting feature found in a word processor. That distinction matters in technical writing. A short expression such as x², a footnote marker, or an ordinal is usually clear as copied Unicode. A longer equation with fractions, operators, limits, or units is better written with the destination's equation editor or with accessible mathematical markup.

Keep the normal wording close to any important styled phrase. Search tools and assistive technology can treat raised Unicode letters differently from ordinary letters, and some form fields accept only a restricted character set. The safe workflow is to use Unicode superscript for a compact visual accent, paste it into the final destination, and retain a plain-text original when the text needs to be searched or edited later.
